The family is a sociological entity that has preserved its significance from the very first day man appeared on earth up till now. It is a well known fact that the family, which is generally defined as the smallest and basic unit of the society in general, consists of sub-systems within itself, has a variety of roles and functions shaped by certain rules. The family has a key role in the continuity of social life. In this way, despite the various changes in socio-cultural, political and economic conditions over time, the concept of family, its existence and importance have always been hailed as quintessential and brought under protection.
The fact that an individual who is a social entity becomes a part of any family from the first moment makes it essential that all individual disciplines, especially philosophy, sociology, psychology and literature, focus on the concept of family. For this reason, it is seen that in the field of literature, which is the main focus of the individual, the concept of family is discussed in many literary genres from the antiquity up till now, and it is the subject of countless literary works. The plays A Raisin in the Sun and Yollar Tükendi have a very rich content in terms of family and familial relations. In this study, we will examine in a comparative manner the roles of family members in the family, bringing under scrutiny the connections and bonds they have established in the family with each other, in the works of contemporary American literary figure Lorraine Hansberry and the 20th century Turkish literary figure Ülker Köksal.
