The earliest known history of Tunceli or the old name of Dersim is that the archaeological findings of the scientific excavations revealed BC. It extends to 5500s. This ancient city, which has traces of the civilizations that existed from the prehistoric times up to the present day; the mound, which is waiting for scientific excavation, has a rich culture which must be examined in every field with examples of religious, military and civil architecture.
The most important part of the cultural richness of the province is the religious architectural works which are shaped by the beliefs and art understanding of different cultures that have maintained their lives in these lands. These architectural structures in the region, especially the Turkish-Islamic period in general, although the region has lived in a period belonging to the Christian population; architectural works such as monasteries, churches, chapels and rock churches have not been studied in detail.
The Ergan (Erkayn-Enkuzik) Church of Hozat, which has survived to the present day by the Byzantine and Armenian periods, is one of the most important Christian religious buildings in the region. The church dated to 424/975, which belongs to the Armenian period, was built in the basilica plan and carries all the subtleties of the art concept of the period with its stone work and plastic ornaments. Due to these features, the subject matter of the article is; In the direction of the study, the architectural aspects were taken into consideration and compared to the other examples.
