In paralell to the globalization process, new urban spaces began to form with the development of transportation and comminication facilities. Shopping centers which are the one of these spaces have become a new lifestyle in terms of cities besides their commercial properties and become one of the new symbols of globalized cities. Nowadays, it is seen that shopping centers have become more widespread not only in big cities even in small cities. In Turkey, shopping centers have began to emerge after the mid-1980s for the first time and become an important part of urban life by increasing rapidly day by day. Especially in recent years, shopping centers which experienced a rapid increase in our country have brought a significant move to the city’s economic and social life and also led to the formation of new urban centers around the city. At the same time, the process of globalization began to make cities similarized. This situation causes erosion of the city’s unique historic fabric and traditional life styles.
In this study, the impact of globalization on urban spaces will be handled through shopping centers. In this context, assessment will be made for Istanbul getting become global city and hosting many shopping centers. This study aims to discuss the impact of shopping centers as an alternative to city center on urban life. This study is based on literature review.
