This research was carried out in order to determine the effects of Understanding by Design (UbD) on the cognitive and affective development of the students in the 8th grade Revolution History and Atatürkism course. Mixed method was applied in this study where quantitative and qualitative research methods were used together. The study group consisted of 33 students in the experimental and 32 students in the control group, who were eighth grade students of a secondary school in the 2019/2020 academic year in Kahramanmaraş. Academic achievement test was used in the quantitative dimension of the research and semi-structured interviews were conducted in the qualitative dimension. In the analysis of quantitative data, analysis of variance (ANOVA) for mixed measurements was applied and the analysis of qualitative data is carried out by means of content analysis. As a result of analyses, it was revealed that academic achievement of students in the group in which UbD was implemented was significantly higher than those in the control group in which ordinary curriculum was managed. When the opinions of the students about the application are examined, it has been concluded that UbD caused students have different perspectives and made them have positive attitudes towards the lesson. It has been concluded that it contributes to the students affectively and cognitively. It is thought that this study can facilitate learning processes by enabling students to gain experience in different teaching processes.
