It is a fact that languages are in a continuous change at separate ratios. However, the scope of this change is extremely variable. As words change, the structural changes are natural as well. However, some structures or words are durable and they resist to changes compared to other words.
According to the current dictionary of Turkish Language Society, the word “Uruk” that means “lineage, progeny”, emerges with the same meaning in the oldest sources of Turkish Language. This word, which kept its meaning and form successfully resisted to ages, come across in different languages. However, the etymological studies proves the relation of this word with Turkish.
The word Uruk that come across in the oldest written sources of Turkish, can be observed in archaic ages with the same form. Sumerians, who distinguish historical ages from archaeological ages with their own-created writing system in BC. 3500s, had two cities called “Ur” and “Uruk”. It is well known fact that the name of these cities are not Sumerish.
A deep research on etymon and achievement of this word has been done within the frame of this study.
In this article, the components of “Uruk” unveiled, conceptual field is determined and different words related to “Uruk” are researched. Whit this scope, the development and spread of this word during the historical process is observed. Besides, its relation with “Uruk” on Sumerian tablets, one of the first written historical examples, is studied.
